June 7, 2010 – Bat Ye'or Speaks in Ottawa!

Please join us for a very rare evening as Bat Ye'or speaks in Ottawa on: "Western Civilization, Israel, and the New Caliphate". June 7, 2010, 7:00 PM Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Admission $20.00/$10 for students

Bat Ye'or (meaning "daughter of the Nile"); is an Egyptian-born Jewish scholar, who writes about the history of non-Muslims in the Middle East, and in particular the history of Christian and Jewish dhimmis living under Islamic governments. Bat Ye'or and her parents were forced to leave Egypt in 1957 after the Suez War in 1956. She described her experiences as follows:

"I had witnessed the destruction, in a few short years, of a vibrant Jewish community living in Egypt for over 2,600 years and which had existed from the time of Jeremiah the Prophet. I saw the disintegration and flight of families, dispossessed and humiliated, the destruction of their synagogues, the bombing of the Jewish quarters and the terrorizing of a peaceful population. I have personally experienced the hardships of exile, the misery of statelessness - and I wanted to get to the root cause of all this. I wanted to understand why the Jews from Arab countries, nearly a million, had shared my experience."

She is the author of eight books, including Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis (2005), Islam and Dhimmitude: Where Civilizations Collide (2001), The Decline of Eastern Christianity: From Jihad to Dhimmitude (1996), and The Dhimmi: Jews and Christians Under Islam (1985). Her most important book is "Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis" which explores the relationship between the EU and the Arab states, and the growing influence of Islam on European politics and culture. Bat Ye'or's husband, David Littman, will also be speaking on Stealth Jihad at the UN Human Rights Council. In addition, Sam Solomon, a convert to Christianity and an expert on Islam, will also be speaking. This event is co-sponsored by the International Free Press Society of Canada... More Info >

November 13, 2009 – Mesage from Mitchell Bellman, President and CEO of Jewish Federation of Ottawa

On Novebmer 5th, the Women's Campaign of the federation held a successfull Choices event. The keynote speaker for Choices, Brigitte Gabriel, was viewed in very different ways by those who participated. Mr. Bellman stated "I was not in attendance at the event and do not have the benefit of a transcript or video of her speach..... I have also hear he say things which, in my opinion, are unacceptable gross generalization of Arabs and Muslims... In no way was it it our intention to present offensive and dangerous generalizations and in no way is that reflective of our core values. The Federation looks forward to using the controversy around the Choices event as a learning experience, ... We also intend to develop a clearer policy on how speakers are chosen for future community events"

October 14, 2009 - What was Jewish about popular culture in fin-de-siècle Vienna?

Wednesday, October 14, 2009, 1:00 pm, Azrieil Theatre, Room 302
Klaus Hödl Professor, Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Graz, Austria.
What was Jewish about popular culture in fin-de-siècle Vienna?

Sponsored by the Embassy of Austria in Ottawa, Jewish Federation of Ottawa and the Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies.

Viennese Jews of the Fin-de-Siècle period are the topic of numerous books in Jewish studies. The overwhelming part of them deals with Jews' contribution to 'high culture' and science. The focus on Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, Arthur Schnitzler, Arnold Schönberg, et.al. led to the assumption that Jews contributed merely to intellectual cultural trends, and that they had no bearing on popular and mass culture. From this perspective resulted the conception that Jews did not socialize and become familiar with the population at large, but remained the stranger, the other, and that this constellation facilitated the rise of anti-Semitism in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

A closer look at the emergence of mass culture in Austria, however, reveals that Jews were very prominent among its organizers, producers, and consumers. They built and directed the largest and most important amusement park in Vienna (Venedig in Wien), organized exhibitions of indigineous people ("Voelkerschauen"), were among so-called folk singers, run music halls, performative theatres, etc. In some fields they were even in the forefront of new trends. Against this background Jews closely interacted with non-Jews in the development of popular and mass culture; the former were not absent from this cultural terrain, but heavily contributed to its formation.

This perspective of Jews in mass culture questions the predominant approach to anti-Semitism. It makes clear that the estrangement of Jews from the non-Jewish population was not a major cause of anti-Jewish hostility. But how else can it be explained? In his paper, Professor Hödl will deal more closely with the role of Jews in Austrian popular culture, and consequently propose a new approach to anti-Semitism in Vienna and Austria. Date: April 13, 2009, 6:30 PM
Place: National Archives/Library of Canada, 395 Wellington Street Ottawa
Admission: $10.00

On April 13, 2009, The Free Thinking Film Society will present its first double feature - "The Monster Among Us" & "The Case for Israel". "The Monster Among Us" is Media Projects' film about the alarming rise of anti-Semitism in Europe - and includes excerpts from almost 200 hours of footage shot in Germany, Hungary, France, England, Holland and Belgium. Anti-Semitism has surfaced on university campuses, in the media, on the streets, on the Internet, at political demonstrations and in seemingly innocent social situations. The Monster Among Us examines this wave of anti-Semitism against European Jews and their institutions, mainly from the point of view of those who have directly experienced the violence or live every day with the threat.
